Exercise equipment utilized at the Veterinary Referral Center of
Colorado includes a treadmill to encourage walking and aerobic
exercise for weight loss, gym balls used for back and limb strengthening,
cavaletti or adjustable-height jumps for encouraging use of limbs
and strengthening, and foam for walking on to improve proprioception.
Range of motion and stretching exercises increase mobility and
function of affected joints, improving the overall biomechanics
of the patient.
One of the unique offerings at VRCC is the hydrotherapy pool located
at the facility. It provides a non-weight bearing exercise for
animals who have pain with walking and an alternative exercise
in addition to regular walking to help increase range of motion
and strength and facilitate weight loss. The pool is large enough
to accommodate any size dog and has jets to provide a current for
resistance. There is even an overhead lift to help get the patients
in and out easily.
