Anesthetic Protocol
We understand that most patients requiring an MRI are critical.
VMRI has MRI compatible monitoring equipment that allows for patient
monitoring (ECG, SpO2, ETCO2, RR, HR, and NIBP) in a high magnetic
field. Intravenous Diazepam and Propofol induction with maintenance
inhalation anesthesia (Sevoflurane) is the standard. Patients recover
quickly and generally without incident. Please have clients fast
the patient for 12 hours prior to anesthesia. Small amounts of
water are permitted. To facilitate the anesthetic protocol, we
do require that the following tests have been performed within
the last two weeks: a CBC, Chemistry Panel, Urinalysis, and chest
radiographs. Please have these results (copies of bloodwork and
original radiographs) available at the time of MRI examination.
What happens the day of the MRI
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are available for outpatient
MRI examinations. Specific drop-off time will be discussed at the
time the appointment is made. Examinations are scheduled in succession,
and clients have the option of either waiting until the patient
has recovered or be near-by with a way to contact them once the
patient is ready to go home. A board certified radiologist on duty
will fax the MRI report to the referring veterinarian with a follow-up
phone call to discuss the results directly. Hard copy films will
be available upon request and be given to the owner to deliver
to your clinic.
